ARTIST STATEMENT: In my recent body of work I have been using the still life as a point of departure. By looking at the still life I can take what I want from it, have areas of emphasis, explore the technical aspects of paint, and use the colors I want to. I do this through drawing, painting, and moving paint around with my hands.
I have been using a still life of clay jars. My enjoyment of working in a ceramics studio in Brooklyn has affected the way that I apply paint and the desire to paint ceramic forms. By being immersed in the process of ceramics an inclination to visually highlight this process through painting has naturally occurred. I enjoy the visual characteristics of ceramic containers as well as their conceptual qualities. However, the process becomes more than just painting jars; through these objects I learn about light, contrast, color, form, paint application, and composition.
