Georgia L Elrod
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Flatbush

ARTIST STATEMENT: My recent work began with a desire to interpret bodily functions, to question and understand our ungraspable insides. Stemming from observation and memory, the imagery is initially cultivated through many ink drawings. Positing physical identity as living abstraction, they can be known and unidentifiable, interior and exterior. The work is full of deliberate marks and questionable parts; the body is idea and space. Visual simultaneities suggest something poetic, perhaps a latent sentimentality. Landscape and architecture are both setting and metaphor in my work. In some of the paintings I have been using traditional faux-finishing techniques as collage, architectural reference, and foil. The appearance of painted stone serves as a reminder of illusion, the faux-stone becomes a hyper-real space framing painted inventions.
