Sara Jimenez
Brooklyn, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: Sara Jimenez is a Filipina-Canadian artist who uses performance, sculpture, drawing and installation, to explore relationships between material impermanence and trans-cultural memory. She creates visual metaphors around concepts of home, absence, and origins. The materials she uses are either visually delicate or inherently are in a state of transformation or decay. She is a collector of recordings and residues. Among other things, she collects familial narratives, abandoned objects, debris, compost, colonial texts and photos from the Philippines, maps, and textiles. Through material experimentation, she combines and rearranges elements from her collections to complicate pre-existing narratives of place, lineage, and temporality.
