Carlos Torres-Machado
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Sunset Park

ARTIST STATEMENT: Carlos Torres-Machado combines a keen sense of color with technology embracing both the personal preference found in Postmodernism and the sentimental dreaminess found in Romanticism. For the artist, the infinite possibilities found in color mimics technology and has set out to communicate this within his art. He explores relationships between color, our immediate everyday lives and the effects of technological evolution. As Torres-Machado develops each body of art the new one emerges naturally.

For his latest body of work [2015- 2017], Torres-Machado merges all his explored visual languages, the same way that postmodernism does with the art techniques used in earlier periods, and he has developed a new series called “Data Centers” to represent the technological information dynamics. Now, color tonality is data, every canvas is a data server and multiple canvases together are a data center.

The artist’ series explores the dichotomies of our daily data consumption in a relationship to our surrounds [space, form, and perspective] using color tonality as a representation of human emotions. In all his bodies of work, the artist demonstrated a hyper-sophisticated level of attention to detail of color, composition, and a concept that remains constant throughout all his work moving forward.

“Torres Machado reflects the facts that determine our era by the intervention of technology, as Warhol did with consumerism or Guayasamín did with the indigenous suffering of Latin America.” Quote from the article “Reinaré, en Brooklyn Art Space,” El Telegrafo newspaper [June 9, 2016]
