Marcy A Chevali
Astoria, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: Through my sculptures, installations and works on paper, I create references to my experiences and reactions with the world around me. I pay particular attention to relationships between myself and other human beings, the social and natural environments and internally within myself. I acknowledge an absurdity in the world by assembling objects in a way that is at the same time awkward, graceful and precarious. Materials range from pencil on paper to lines of thread and glass tumbling from ceiling to floor, to lines drawn in the earth with my hands and colorful fabric in the wind. These simple and readily available materials and the handmade quality of my work convey a sense of urgency in the need to express, rather than a sense of perfection and un-attainability. Influenced by autobiography and a desire to see things from another perspective, I hope to achieve and share a level of understanding of ways of being in the world.
