ARTIST STATEMENT: Utilizing primarily photography, audio and video, my work focuses on portraiture to examine issues of identity, representation, and displacement. As an immigrant from Brazil—a country with rich cultural diversity—I’m fascinated by cultural differences and their manifestations, and intrigued by the evolution of identity in first and second generation migrants. While challenging the role of photography as truth, I question universal social constructs and beliefs in search of what connects us to each other. I'm fascinated by the human condition and strive to pursue what Toni Morrison calls the 'human project—which is to remain human and to block the dehumanization of others.’
