ARTIST STATEMENT: I have a research-intensive practice that integrates source data, historical and literary references, imagery, and text. My work concerns the tension between information and lived experience, our own pattern recognition and that of others, and the gaze of the algorithm and its human creator. I am particularly interested in error. I tend to work serially to explore error-filled data underlying social and economic systems. Despite a process of reproduction and reinterpretation, the work how the outcome of any dynamic process is sensitive to its starting point. In physics and social science this notion of the impact of past events on outcomes is called path dependence. Path dependence is not deterministic. Cumulative decisions and events can lead to any number of states, each of which bears the imprint of the past. I first explored these themes in in printmaking, a process of mark-making that is mediated by 1,500-pound machine that applies 6,000 pounds of pressure in transferring ink to paper. Errors or unexpected outcomes can either be discarded, accommodated, or amplified but never eliminated from the visual field. I continue to explore the deployment of the matrix and multiples as metaphor for the institutional arrangements in which we are embedded. My sculptural and installation work combines language and numbers, ideas and images, systems and components. The work instantiates the technological mediation of everyday life and the accretion of history and systems.
