Atsushi Ohashi
Brooklyn, NY

Media:Painting;

ARTIST STATEMENT: In my paintings of New York City subways for instance, you will see people on the platform of a subway station bathed in a spotlight of intense, bright colors juxtaposed against a monochromatic background, waiting in anticipation or watching with disappointment as a train passed them by. I consider this feeling of missing or meeting an expectation to be universally felt by all. In this way, it binds together the countless unique values on the city and its people. In other paintings, subjects are also highlighted with color, popping out from their settings. Through my work, I hope to illustrate how the pure and extraordinary often comes from ordinary.
