ARTIST STATEMENT: For the last three years, my practice has developed around the body of work, Under Construction, in which I documented New York City's constantly evolving residential and industrial sites. The work sites acted as a catalyst for objects that incorporated similar industrial and commercial materials that are used in buildings and their signage. These works address formal concerns of mark, gesture, and objecthood in relation to the formation and destruction of urban architecture. At my solo exhibition at Rubber Factory titled Subdivision, I photographed renderings of new buildings in progress to make vinyl blueprints that further subdivided an existing space. In my most recent project, A Confusion of Surfaces, I advance my previous work by considering the industrial facade as a membrane. These works utilize the image as a skin, a word interchangeably used for surfaces of buildings and the human form, to cover aluminum sheeting. Each form is cut and shaped by hand to push my relationship between the image and its materiality. This allows me to translate the face of development into new objects that collapse the surfaces of residential and industrial spaces with their past, present, and unknown futures.
