ARTIST STATEMENT: My work explores the role of the artist as researcher, archivist, producer, and cultural activist. My fascination with the archiving process is fomented by personal experience: at age eighteen I learned that my family home had been abandoned and that all my childhood possessions - first love letters, books and records, childhood photos and art projects, Super 8 films and family albums - had disappeared along with the memories they held. This experience sowed the seeds of my obsession with memory, nostalgia and lost histories; I am concerned with image accumulation and circulation, originality and authorship and notions of individual and collective identity and memory. By mining archives and reanimating archival materials, I explore the transformation that occurs when an object is removed from its original context and considered ex situ; I raise questions about the stories that are told and preserved, and those that are suppressed or forgotten.
