ARTIST STATEMENT: I play the role of artist, research scientist, and adventurer to document the process of discovery. I resuscitate the methods of historical explorers whose exploits trended towards romantic, even magical, experiences and I bring them into a contemporary world that is dominated by empirical procedures, where the romance of scientific pursuit has been discouraged. My work simultaneously combines video, installation and performance to present a complete narrative unachievable in one individual medium. I gather source material by exploring natural phenomena and unusual landscapes, allowing the world around me to become a playground for storytelling. Unknown places are a starting point for my practice and I deal with natural and scientific phenomena in a naive (yet sincere) way by applying it to everyday routines. I leave room for play and spontaneity in all of my work in order to retain a spirit of true exploration. I draw upon unexpected moments to enrich the narrative in my pieces, and combine careful planning, the expectation of failure, and fantastical elements that push against the realism of an experience to create a world that is as believable as it is strange.
