ARTIST STATEMENT: Working with means of communication from comics and text to video, I decode their content and lay bare abstract forms that make up those means of communication. Often, like in the Still Cancelled series, I introduce a visible cancellation of the content. In that series, cartoon stills are removed from their context and repainted on canvas. Scribbles then cancel some of the forms, leaving mostly abstract forms. In a sister series called Kritzel Kratzel, the scribbles are found images from cartoons but the background context is removed, leaving only reproduced marks that are copies of the originals.
Abstract forms that form the basis of the medium—like aspect ratio, simple shapes, and flat planes of color—reveal themselves as arbitrary. Cancellation of content becomes the content.
