Skye Gilkerson
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Bedford-Stuyvesant

ARTIST STATEMENT: Through installation, video, and works on paper, I explore the tension between time and timelessness, place and placelessness, and the human and universal scale. Recent works use pages of the New York Times on dates selected for cosmic events such as meteor showers, full moons, or the total solar eclipse. Covered in silver leaf, the pages silently reflect the world around them, both censoring and memorializing the words beneath. Another project utilizes ink made from ashes of a month's worth of newspapers burned on every new moon, conflating human timescales with natural cycles.
