ARTIST STATEMENT: As an amateur naturalist and archaeologist I approach abandoned places and objects with an eye for how human intervention can be both beautiful and destructive. As an artist I make work in relation to these spaces. Sites are painted, gilded, etched and photographed to investigate, alter and document our connections to the places we live. Of particular interest to me is what is discarded. In Abstraction for Dogs objects left on the street are “marked” with flat shapes of color to draw them into a dialogue with the history of geometric abstraction. In House Paintings similar gestures are drawn and painted on an architectural scale. These works are photographed and are exhibited as printed matter. While exploring various sites I collect objects (basically trash) that hold the history of previous inhabitants. In 2017 I organized a community arts project called Gilding Bee and invited summer visitors and year round residents to gild these found objects in the Village of Fleischmanns, located in the Catskill region of New York.
