ARTIST STATEMENT: Rassan Cobbs Artist Statement
I am a multi-disciplinary artist working in clay, paint, and occasionally watercolor and print that juxtaposes forms and aesthetics, contemporary and ritualistic against ideas rooted in the memory of DNA. This extends to the memory of the subconscious as well as the ancestral. As an African-American and student of history and self-knowledge, I have the benefit of drawing on all there is to offer throughout the diaspora. My art is hard bop; it is punk; it is Hip Hop. It is an amalgamation of influences spanning antiquity, pre- and post- antebellum, present and future. Equal parts Lando Calrissian and Malcolm X, my art rest in the gap bridging social commentary as well broader humanistic themes that transcend culture, time and place.
