Sasha Chavchavadze
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Gowanus

ARTIST STATEMENT: Sasha Chavchavadze's mixed-media drawings, paintings and installations focus on forgotten history and its effect on memory and place. She has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad, including: the Luise Ross Gallery and Cooper Union Gallery, New York City; the Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock, Arkansas; the U.S. Embassy, and the Museum of Literature, Tbilisi, Georgia; Kentler International Drawing Space and the Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn. She has been invited to present her work in lectures and workshops by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and in a TED talk at TedxGowanus. Her awards and residencies include: 2018 Visiting Artist, American Academy in Rome; BCAT Multimedia Residency (BRICmedia); finalist, International Monument to the Cold War competition; Residency, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Chavchavadze's public art installation Battle Pass: Revolution II is located at Smith and Bergen Streets in Brooklyn, commissioned by the New York City Department of Transporation Urban Art Program. Chavchavadze has created numerous collaborative art projects in Brooklyn, that connect art to other disciplines and to the community. She is the founder of Proteus Gowanus, an exhibition and event space that was a cultural hub in Gowanus for ten years. Other artist collectives initiated by Chavchavadze are: the Battle Pass Collective, D'Amico Gowanus Laboratory, and the Carnival of Connectivity, which received a 2018 Brooklyn Arts Council grant and was profiled by BRICTV BK Stories.
