Rebecca J Shapass
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Bensonhurst

ARTIST STATEMENT: My practice is focused in an exploration of femininity and womxnhood. This interest converges with a study of memory and time, careful research, and the employment of anachronistic technology to address themes of sexuality, identity, and the body. My work takes a highly personal approach. Diaristic elements are combined with found footage, analog video mixing, and the use of my body in performance in front of and behind the camera in order to deconstruct notions surrounding femininity through the lens of greater historical and social narratives. My works take the form of film & video, installation, performance, and multi-media art.

6 min, color, silent Four-channel video installation, CRT monitors, fabric, DVD players, plaster-cast pillar, shower rod. Installed at EFA Project Space for the show the Endless Editions 2018 Biennial "Optimism" curated by Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo.

Super 8mm film installation, 13x14" From a series of works in development surrounding narratives, taboos and histories about menstruation. More recently, sculptural elements have been added to the work in the form of a pile of apple cores that sits on the floor below the frame. The resin-cast cores contain droplets of menstrual blood.

A work exploring the space between life and death, the intense feeling of flight, and the desire to exist in the flux of suspended time. Exhibitions and Screenings: "YES: Isabel Sakura/ Rebecca Shapass" Microscope Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), "Optimism" 2018 Endless Biennial curated by Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo at EFA Project Space (New York, NY, 2018), Art Night by The Myraid (New York, NY, 2018).

"Associations" is a a study and deconstruction of my own female anatomy. Through the removal of any sexual associations of the body, I aim to reclaim my anatomy by showing the body as a shape, a monument, a movement-- a work of art of its own accord.
