ARTIST STATEMENT: Digitally recording vast landscapes from land, sea, and air, I capture my movements through places of natural wonder. After watching the collected footage, I make intuitive paintings on my studio floor, recreating the unique colors, patterns and textures in the landscapes. I record the painting process and digitally combine the videos of painting with those from my travels. Using a projector, I map the videos in geometric shapes onto the paintings themselves as well as screens arranged in space to create digitally layered new environments.
My installations are reinventions of the landscape that viewers can enter and experience for themselves. The overlapping of timecodes that exists within my process allows me to collapse the distance between the landscape, the painting, and their recorded and edited versions, creating a place where past, present, and future coexist. Composing with layers of time and space, I connect viewers to my personal journey. I think of this as a new form of travel that aims to challenge our habits of experiencing time as linear and one-directional.
