Birgit Rathsmann
Brooklyn, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: I am interested in deploying characters as catalysts, who celebrate and play with otherness and adore marginality. My work is deeply rooted in my love for the humanity of the various communities I belong to. Characters are portrayed in narratives that transform humiliated, reduced, debased subjects into protagonists of new narratives of self-reconstruction,, absurdity, love. and humor. This series of drawings explore a number of characters who have rebuilt themselves after a devastating loss in such a way as to integrate the resulting psychic transformation (scar?) into their personality. The drawings posit that making it to the end of every day is like visionary architecture. The characters are drawn over photographs of an abandoned, failed investment construction project, the remaining rebar steel rods gesturing to the skies like clumsy skeletons. In some cases, the drawings have made the leap to sculpture.
